After the Cold War, Nine Eleven, Iraq and Afghanistan, How Should America Lead in Our Globalized World?

by Paul Ballard
April 16, 2013
In 2014 when our troops finally depart Afghanistan, America will be at peace for the first time since the Nine Eleven attack in 2001. Fittingly that will be almost a quarter century since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 brought an end to the Cold War. Continue reading

by Rodel Rodis
April 16, 2013
The 1993 Best Picture movie, Schindler’s List, informed the world about Austrian industrialist Oskar Schindler and how he saved 1,100 Polish Jews during WWII by hiring them as workers in his factory. A new documentary, Rescue in the Philippines: Refuge From the Holocaust, being shown this month in hundreds of PBS stations throughout the US, will inform the world about Philippine Commonwealth Pres. Manuel L. Quezon and how he helped 1,305 German Jews escape Nazi persecution in 1939 by providing them with visas and safe shelter in the Philippines. Continue reading

The Fast (Fat!) Food Chains

by Dr. Philip S. Chua.
April 16, 2013
A lawyer in the United States, Sam Hirsch, sued McDonald’s on behalf of his obese clients. Of the tobacco companies that had been sued, he says “you can’t stop tobacco from being unhealthy, but you can make food less unhealthy.” Obviously, he was referring to the health dangers of what many people consider junk foods, with high cholesterol and fats, like hamburgers, eggs, fries, etc. in this $142 Billion fast food industry. Continue reading

VIVA ITALIA! Italy’s Vibrant Filipino Community

by Fred C. Wilson III
April 16, 2013
A few years back I did an article on my experiences in Rome. My wife and I traveled to Italy a few years ago. The trip was a gift for my 60th Birthday. During our stay we were unaware of the large number of Filipino-Italians. Had I known I would have added a section about them in my article ‘Roman Holiday.’ Rome is home to a variety of ethnic groups; the Roma peoples, Africans, Mexicans, university students, and the usual entourage of pilgrims hailing from all over the globe hoping to visit St. Peter’s Basilica and see the Pope. Psst…….Listen!

by Arnold De Villa
April 16, 2013
Dr. Louann Brizendine, a clinical professor of psychiatry from the University of California (San Francisco) once declared that a woman uses about 20,000 words per day while a man speaks only about 7,000. From that time on, gender related issues on talking sparked controversies across all media with divergent inferences. Three years ago, quite related to this issue, researchers from the Indiana School of Medicine came up with a study suggesting that men only use half of their brains when listening while women used every neuron, implying that women listened more. Nuclear Blackmail

April 16, 2013
North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un’s saber rattling – threatening to send nuclear ballistic missiles to the United States and Guam — has left a lot of people wondering what is he up to? Does he think that he could bring the world’s only superpower to her knees? The answer is no — Kim wouldn’t dare do that! However, if he did, the repercussions could be disastrous, nay, catastrophic! But he doesn’t seem to know that. If he does, then he is playing a very dangerous game. Continue reading
